Nestlé empowers Lagos school kids on environmental sustainability education

In a commendable effort to foster environmental responsibility among young minds, Nestlé Nigeria has recorded a significant stride through its global initiative, Nestlé for Healthier Kids (N4HK).

Annually, N4HK educates over 8,000 children on healthy nutrition, active lifestyles, hygiene, and sustainability.

The initiative is part of Nestlé’s broader goal to help 50 million children lead healthier lives by 2030, encouraging healthier choices and providing children with the knowledge to make informed decisions.

The initiative recently reached a milestone in Lagos State when Nestlé, in collaboration with the International Climate Change Development Initiative (ICCDI), held the closing ceremony of the Sustainability Training for Kids.

This year marked the extension of N4HK to Lagos, starting with 137 children from five primary schools in Ilupeju, the location of Nestlé Nigeria’s head office.

The Corporate Communications, Public Affairs and Sustainability Lead of Nestlé, Victoria Uwadoka, highlighted the positive impact of the N4HK sustainability training.

She emphasized the need to instill environmental responsibility at an early age, thus nurtures a generation committed to sustainable practices. “We are delighted to see the positive impact of the N4HK sustainability training on children across Lagos State. By instilling a sense of environmental responsibility at an early age, we are nurturing a generation that will actively contribute to a more sustainable future. “We recognize the collaboration of our partners, ICCDI and Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), for their unwavering commitment to raising a healthier generation,” Uwadoka stated.

Olumide Idowu, founder of ICCDI, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration with Nestlé and revealed how the partnership has trained children to be aware of their environmental impact and fostered responsibility.

“In partnership with Nestlé Nigeria, we have trained and instilled responsibility and awareness in children about their environmental impact. This promotes sustainable habits, empowers informed choices, and cultivates a mindset of environmental stewardship. By learning about recycling and waste management, children develop environmental empathy and become advocates for positive change,” Idowu said.

Mrs. Titi Oshodi, Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Circular Economy, stressed the need to empower children to make informed choices, address issues like malnutrition, and promote sustainable practices.

“The health and well-being of our children are in our hands. By empowering them to make informed choices, addressing issues like malnutrition, and promoting sustainable practices, we can pave the way for a brighter, healthier future.

“Let us commit to working together across sectors and borders to ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive. It is truly a privilege and an honor to be associated with a social development initiative that holds such profound significance for the future of our generation. Nestlé’s dedication and commitment to promoting a healthier and more sustainable future for our children is commendable and deeply appreciated,” she remarked.

Nestlé commitment goes beyond the N4HK initiative. The company emphasizes responsible sourcing, human rights protection, and environmental stewardship. The company engages in rural community development through initiatives like the Nestlé scholarship scheme, which targets youth development in education, and the provision of WASH facilities to promote access to water and hygiene.

By integrating social and environmental considerations into its business operations, Nestlé Nigeria is dedicated to creating sustainable value for all stakeholders. The company’s efforts are making a positive impact on society and the planet, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.
