Nene Yakubu shows class, wins ITF J-30, J-60 titles

It was a show of class and determination for Ohunene Yakubu as she battles through to win the Junior ITF events held recently in Abuja.

Coming to the championships as the Number 1 seed, the 16-year-old leave no doubt as she defended her title in both the J-30 and J-60 events.

Currently based at the ITF High Performance Centre in Tunisia, Yakubu ensured that she proved why she was the tournament’s top seed, without any iota of doubt.

Not only was she clinical, she won both legs of the junior ITF tournaments without as much as dropping a set, a feat which is almost unprecedented.

The interesting twist to her triumphs at both legs of the ITF competition is the fact that she came up against the same opponent – Alisha Ndukwu – whom she had never played against or met at any championship before.

And with the same attitude, drive and tenacity on the court, condemned her British-Nigerian opponent to two consecutive final defeats within the space of two weeks.

Ohunene, the younger of the Yakubu Sisters, has now effectively won three ITF titles in 2024 already, having also won one of two legs at the J-30 Abuja earlier in the year.

The icing on the cake for the teenager in the last six months would be the J-60 win, as she fell short in the semis of the same J-60 when she played in Tunisia a few weeks ago.
