The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is taking steps to simplify the complex telecom tariff landscape in Nigeria. The regulator plans to limit the number of tariff plans offered by telecom operators to a maximum of seven.

This move comes in response to consumer confusion caused by the proliferation of numerous data and voice plans. Some operators currently offer as many as 145 data plans and 27 voice plans.

Ikechukwu Adinde, Director of the Consumer Affairs Bureau at NCC, who  disclosed this at a 2-day upskilling on trends in telecom industry for media stakeholders, on Thursday, in Lagos, explained that the abundance of options often makes it difficult for consumers to choose the best plan for their needs. By reducing the number of options, the NCC aims to make it easier for consumers to compare plans and make informed decisions.

“Our goal is to streamline options, allowing consumers to clearly understand and compare what’s available. With fewer choices, people can make informed decisions with confidence”, he said.

The NCC also aims to address concerns about data depletion. The regulator encourages consumers to monitor their data usage and has provided resources to help them manage their data consumption more efficiently.

“Through publishing approved tariff plans on our website and providing data usage tips, we are dedicated to improving consumer awareness,” Adinde added.

By simplifying the tariff structure and promoting data awareness, the NCC hopes to create a more consumer-friendly telecom environment in Nigeria.
