The Nigeria Basketball Federation has slammed a ₦3 million fine on the Nigeria Customs Service Basketball Team following the club’s conduct during last season’s Nigerian Premier Basketball League Final Four clash against Rivers Hoopers.
The sanction comes after a controversial incident during the high-stakes encounter, where Customs players protested against officiating decisions with about seven minutes left on the clock.
Dissatisfied with several calls made by the referees, the team refused to continue meaningful play, allowing the remaining time to wind down in what many described as an embarrassing moment for Nigerian basketball.
The incident sparked widespread criticism from fans, players, and stakeholders, many of whom argued that the action damaged the integrity and image of the domestic league.

In its ruling, the federation stated that the conduct of the Customs team brought the game into disrepute and fell short of the professionalism expected from clubs participating in the league.
The NBBF said the ₦3 million fine underlines its commitment to discipline, fair competition, and the protection of the reputation of Nigerian basketball.
The federation added that actions capable of undermining the spirit of competition and sportsmanship would not be tolerated as the game continues to grow both locally and internationally.
