The Nigeria Bar Association, Aba branch, Abia State, has lamented the gruesome murder of one of its own, Lucky Chinonso Emeh.
Emeh, who worked with the Abia State Ministry of Justice, Umuahia, was said to have been shot dead in the state capital by gunmen on September 3.
Charles Nsobundu Onuchukwu, Chairman, and Chuks Nwaokoro, Secretary, NBA Aba branch of NBA, said their colleague was killed in front of an eatery on Tuesday night.
According to the statement, “preliminary inquiry and investigation from the family when the Executive Committee of the NBA, Aba branch led by her chairman paid the immediate family of late Emeh a condolence visit, revealed that he received a phone call from someone he knew at about 7:45 pm on Monday evening of 2nd September 2024, requesting him (Emeh) to come to a particular location which he declined.
“The executive committee of Aba branch was further informed by the elder brother of the deceased, Mr Justice Emeh, that at about 8:00pm the same Monday evening, the deceased went to a restaurant in front of his house to eat; the same person who called him at about 7:45 pm called him again and he told them that he was at a restaurant in front his house.
“The said caller and his gang came to where he was eating and shot him twice in his forehead. The assailants after shooting him collected his phone and then zoomed off in an awaiting car.”
NBA in the statement said attack on lawyers who are in private and public practices in recent times could no longer be tolerated.
“Our colleague’s life was snuffed off in its prime and this is unacceptable. We therefore, condemn this dastardly act and demand that the perpetrators of this heinous crime be brought to book.”
Condemning Emeh’s murder as a gruesome act and a complete affront and assault on members of the NBA, the Aba branch urged the state Commissioner of Police to take over case of unraveling those behind the dastardly act seriously, regretting that lawyers lawfully plying their trade had now become endangered species.
