The National Senior Secondary Schools Education Commission (NSSSEC) has embarked on steps to improve students performance in English language and mathematics across Nigeria.
Speaking in Kano, Monday, at the opening ceremony of a 5 day workshop for selected English language and mathematics teachers in the North West region, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tyela Ajayi admitted that learners performances in both subject areas at the local, state and national levels have been low.
He explained that the essence of the train – the – trainer workshop embarked upon by the Commission is to improve teachers knowledge in their subject content and pedagogical skills, including changing the teaching dynamics from the norm to a result oriented basis for effective curriculum delivery.
Accordingly. he said the Commission has developed a teaching manual for Mathematics and English language teachers in Nigeria with a view to enhancing their pedagogical and methodological skills in both subjects.
The Executive Secretary decried the fact that in the past, sone teachers of both subject areas were of the habit of skipping certain topics due to their inability to teach these topics, consequently denying students the opportunity to learn these topics, leading eventually to poor examination performances.
He insisted that the manual will take care of this challenge and will in addition, ensure teachers competency and improve instructional strategy and methods as well as stimulate learners interest in both subject areas.
Participants at the workshop were drawn from the seven states in the North West region while papers were presented by experts in the two subjects areas
