National breakdance championship: FAME Foundation holds Kano, Kaduna qualifiers

FAME Foundation, a non-governmental organization based in Abuja, recently organised national breakdance championship qualifiers in Kaduna and Kano.

Executive Director of FAME Foundation, Aderonke Ogunleye-Bello, said the event, held under the Play it Dream it Initiative, aimed to empower youth through sports and promote inclusivity.

The championship began on July 17, 2023, at the Alliance Francaise office in Kaduna, attracting 41 break dancers. In Kano, the qualifier took place simultaneously at the Alliance Francaise office, with 30 participants. Six finalists were selected from Kaduna, while Kano produced five finalists.

Benjamin Samuel, also known as Bboy Xsycho, a participant from Kano, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, as it marked the first time a breakdance championship qualifier had taken place in the state.

Samuel had been dancing for 15 years and appreciated the efforts of the French Embassy and FAME Foundation in bringing the championship to Kano.

Similarly, Obed Bawa, also known as Bboy Bawa, a finalist from Kaduna, shared his excitement about the event, recognisng the significance of local auditions and the pride they would bring to the state.

He expressed his commitment to training hard and making Kaduna proud at the finals in Lagos.

Following the qualifiers, Ogunleye-Bello, expressed her gratitude to the French Embassy and the Nigeria Dance Sport Federation for their support.

She emphasised the importance of the Play It Dream It Initiative and its ability to include and empower young people through sports.

The competition will continue in three more states, including Port Harcourt on August 2, Abuja on September 9, and Lagos on September 22, with the grand finale scheduled for October.

The winners of the grand finale will represent Nigeria at an international breakdance championship in France, with consolation prizes for the runner-up.

The project is funded by the Solidarity Fund for Innovative Projects (FSPI – R) of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs. It aims to support initiatives in the areas of democratic governance, culture, French, higher education, and research.
