A Yoruba group, Oodua People’s Frontiers (OPF), has urged President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to be wary of groups, especially in the South West geopolitical zone, who may want to pit him against his political allies in the North.
Convener of the group, Moses Oluwasegun Odewale, gave the warning at a press conference in Lagos, where he condemned the threat to the North by the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) for contesting the National Assembly sharing formula announced by the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A faction of the OPC loyal to Dr Frederick Fasun had warned northern politicians against blackmailing Tinubu over the leadership of the National Assembly.
The group, in a statement issued by its President, Otunba Wasiu Afolabi, said the politicians were overheating the polity unnecessarily with their interest to remain relevant in government. But, speaking in Lagos yesterday, Odewale said the threat was not indicative of the position of the Yoruba people, and, “the threats, though empty and unsolicited, are embarrassing, shameful and only expose the inconsistencies of the OPC and other groups like the Afenifere that pose as representatives of the entire Yoruba nation.
“We condemn with all our might the uncivilised action of OPC that threatens the long standing political friendship that exists between the North and what is today the Southwest.
“By making it look like they are protecting their son, the President-Elect, Tinubu, the OPC has ended up exposing him in particular and the Southwest to several political vulnerabilities in the future.”
He described the North as a close political ally of Tinubu and played a significant role in APC zoning its presidential ticket to the South.
