Nasarawa to invest billions in Akwanga sports academy as renovation work begins

From Abe Leonard, Lafia

In a bid to enhance sporting events and promote talent development, the Nasarawa State Government has embarked on a comprehensive renovation project at the Akwanga Sports Academy.

The announcement was made yesterday during an inspection visit by Lucky Isaac Yargwa, the Commissioner of Youth and Sports Development, along with a team from the ministry. Yargwa emphasised the government’s commitment to investing billions of naira in order to elevate the standards of the academy.

The commissioner revealed that a contract has already been awarded for the renovation of five classroom blocks, as well as the construction of a dining hall and an examination hall.

“As you can see the work is in progress, the foundation of the dining hall ad the examination centre is already in progress, we expect this contract to be completed in four months.”

These improvements he said will provide a conducive environment for students to learn and develop their athletic abilities. Additionally, Yargwa issued a stern warning to individuals encroaching on the academy’s land, stating that “the government would take all necessary measures to ensure the premises are properly fenced according to specified parameters.”

Expressing gratitude for Governor Engr Abdullahi Sule’s generosity in awarding the renovation contract, Yargwa urged the people to continue supporting the state government over the next four years, highlighting the potential for further progress.

“Nasarawa State is one of the few states in Northern Nigeria to possess such a remarkable facility, I assure the public that the government is determined to sustain and optimise its usage.”

In response, the principal of the Akwanga Sports Academy, Mr Williams Aloko, extended his appreciation to the governor for the support rendered thus far.

However, he appealed for urgent action to halt the encroachment on the academy’s land, which has been adversely affecting the students’ activities.

Williams disclosed that the academy currently caters to over three hundred and fifty students, both boarders and day students, unisex, boys and girls and proudly mentioned that it has produced numerous successful graduates over the years.

He thanked the governor for his efforts to stabilise the sports academy adding that they would always support the state government and the ministry where necessary.

Notably, one of the academy’s esteemed alumni is Ibrahim Sunusi, a talented footballer who currently plays for Montreal CF in the United States football league. Sunusi’s success serves as a testament to the quality of education and training provided at the Akwanga Sports Academy.
