…Respect agreement with DSS for peace in Nasarawa
From Abel Leonard, Lafia
The Nasarawa State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a press statement in which they expressed their concern over the actions of the outgoing governor, Engr. AA Sule, and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The statement signed by Alh. Ibrahim Hamza, State Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Nasasrawa chapter sent to Daily Sun on Sunday calls on their supporters to adhere to the principles of “No Comments” and avoid engaging in media trials.
The PDP accused Engr. AA Sule and his associates of attempting to manipulate public sentiment through media coverage and discussions regarding the recent tribunal ruling in the State Governorship Election. They argue that these actions are intended to influence public opinion ahead of their appeal in court.
Furthermore, the PDP claims that the APC and Engr. Sule’s political appointees have increased their media presence through press conferences, social media posts, and press releases, discussing the tribunal’s outcome.
These discussions allegedly involve insults and foul language, contrary to the earlier advice given to both party chairmen by the State Director of the State Security Service (SSS) to maintain civility in their communication.
The PDP emphasizes that they have respected this admonition, opting for a more restrained tone in their responses and replies. However, they accuse the APC, Engr. Sule, and his supporters of flouting these guidelines, engaging in insults and discussing matters pending before the courts in the media, which they consider subjudicial.
The PDP asserts that such actions not only undermine the integrity of legal proceedings but also compromise the principles of justice and peace.
“In a democracy, the courts play a crucial role in resolving legal disputes while protecting the rights of all parties involved. Public or media commentary on pending court cases, particularly when founded on falsehoods and insults, can influence opinions.”
“Dr. David Ombugadu, the incoming governor of Nasarawa State, in consultation with the party and its leaders, has advised PDP members and supporters to avoid getting entangled in disputes with the APC and stay focused on upholding their mandate within the rule of law.”
The press statement also references a recent judgment by the Supreme Court involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the declaration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the President of Nigeria. Justice Inyang Okoro lamented the practice of media trials and the potential threats posed by such actions to judges and justices.
The PDP calls on Engr. A. A. Sule and his associates to respect the earlier agreement made by both parties with the State Director of the SSS and refrain from actions that undermine the judiciary or provoke their supporters.
The statement ends with a warning that should the actions by the APC and its leaders persist, the PDP may be left with no other choice but to take appropriate measures.
