Nasarawa PDP criticises governor for alleged betrayal of nomad vigilante group

From Abel Leonard, Lafia

In a recent press briefing on Thursday, Hon Francis Orogu, Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Nasarawa State, has levelled scathing criticisms against Governor Sule of Nasarawa State, accusing him of backtracking on his support for the Nomad Vigilante group.

Orogu’s remarks come amidst escalating tensions surrounding security measures in the state.

Orogu’s statements were prompted by Governor Sule’s alleged denial of association with the Nomad Vigilante group, despite publicly acknowledging cooperation with them during a televised program on Channels Television aimed at addressing insecurity in the state.

In a strongly-worded rebuke, Orogu condemned the governor’s purported inconsistency, labelling him as a “serial betrayer” for retracting his previous statements.

He emphasised his stance, stating, “I am not against the Nomad group if it operates within the confines of the law and there exists an agreement that it will enhance security. Why then would I not support it?” Orogu questioned the governor’s reversal of stance, particularly after extending government facilities for their inauguration, only to disavow them later under pressure.

Expressing dismay at the perceived snub, Orogu highlighted the logistical incongruities, questioning how the Nomad Vigilante group could be escorted on Government House road to the Police Headquarters on foot, only to be subsequently renounced when they require governmental assistance the most.

In light of the upcoming bye-elections scheduled for certain local government areas in the state on Saturday, Orogu underscored the PDP’s preparedness for the electoral process.

He stressed the importance of free and credible elections, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to uphold its mandate.

Orogu cautioned the newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of INEC in Nasarawa, urging him to uphold the commitment to fairness and transparency.

He warned against any potential deviation from delivering free and fair elections, emphasising that any hint of electoral malpractice could result in legal challenges and endanger the lives of citizens.
