Momentum is rapidly building across Nasarawa State as pressure mounts on Dr Muhammed Musa Maikaya to formally declare his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election. What started as quiet appeals from political associates has grown into a widespread grassroots movement cutting across youth groups, women’s associations, business communities, and transport workers.

In Lafia on Thursday, Keke NAPEP riders have become some of the most visible promoters of the Maikaya project, branding their tricycles with inscriptions such as “Maikaya for Governor” and his mantra, “Fresh Vision, Real Impact.” Posters and branded signposts have also continued to spring up across major routes in the capital and neighbouring towns.

Youth organisations from Lafia to Keffi and Akwanga have intensified their calls, insisting that Maikaya has demonstrated the kind of leadership the state needs. Spokesperson of the Nasarawa Youths Coalition for Ciroman Toto, David Yahaya, said:

“Dr. Maikaya has been consistent in touching lives long before politics. His commitment to humanitarian causes, education, and empowerment is why the youths are saying the time is now.”

Women groups have echoed similar sentiments. Mrs Aisha Ahmed, representing women from Nasarawa South, described him as “a listening leader with compassion,” adding: “He doesn’t discriminate. Whether it’s widows, market women or rural women seeking support for their businesses, he is always there. We believe he has the empathy and vision to take Nasarawa to greater heights.”

Among informal workers, Keke riders have taken the lead, volunteering to promote his potential candidacy without financial inducement. A rider at the Lafia Youth Centre Junction, Yakubu Danlami, said, “Nobody paid us. We put these stickers because we believe Maikaya is different. He supports youths and the less privileged, and we know he will create opportunities for young people.”

Market women in Lafia Modern Market and Akwanga Central Market have also begun forming informal support groups. A vegetable seller, Mama Falmata, said, “He helps widows, he supports traders, and he visits us without cameras. If someone like that wants to be governor, we will stand with him.”

Small business owners, artisans, and low-income entrepreneurs have also cited the interventions of the Maikaya Development Foundation, which has funded scholarships, grants, and health support across communities.

Similarly, the Building Materials Association in Nasarawa State recently commended Maikaya for installing solar energy facilities in their market. A senior member of the association said, “What Dr Maikaya did for us with the solar energy shows he understands the needs of business communities. This is why we believe he is fit for higher leadership responsibilities.”

Beyond the business and informal sectors, several traditional rulers, community leaders, and political blocs continue to consult with him. A stakeholder from Toto LGA, Ahmed Saliu, said, “Dr Maikaya has consistently supported our youths, widows, and communities. His style of leadership promotes unity and peace.”

Another supporter said the push for Maikaya’s declaration is driven by competence rather than ambition. “People want a governor who understands development—someone with experience, exposure, and humanitarian spirit,” he stated.

Although Maikaya has not officially declared, he has acknowledged the pressure and the consultations underway. Speaking recently, he said, “Leadership is not a one-man endeavour. We are listening to voices across the state. The consultations are wide, sincere, and ongoing. What we seek is inclusive governance rooted in service, accountability, and real impact.”

Political observers say the growing groundswell is an indication that a declaration may be imminent, given the rising enthusiasm across the state’s social and economic groups.

While the political atmosphere continues to intensify, one thing appears clear: Maikaya’s “Fresh Vision, Real Impact” message is resonating deeply with residents, particularly at the grassroots level, where his support base seems to be expanding fastest.
