Nasarawa assembly vows to tackle climate change with new laws

From Abel Leonard, Lafia

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has promised to enact laws that will mitigate the negative effects of climate change in the state and tackle associated environmental challenges.

Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, Hon. Mohammed Adamu Omadefu (APC Keana), stated this while hosting members of the African Activists for Climate Change Justice in his office in Lafia on Wednesday.

The group, led by its leader Dr Michael David, Executive Director of the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP), presented Hon. Omadefu with the Climate Champion of the Year award for his commitment to championing climate and environmental activities in the state.

Hon. Omadefu expressed his appreciation and acknowledged the organisation’s significant contributions and zeal in promoting activities that address environmental and climate challenges. He assured them of the House’s full support through legislation that would complement their efforts in the state.

Hon. Omadefu said the 7th State Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, is committed to enacting laws that will improve the lives of the people of Nasarawa State.

“I want to appreciate you for the visit, as this is very effective and apt. What you are doing is helping my committee, and by extension the House, to function well on environmental issues.

“We will partner positively to achieve the mandate on climate issues. You are dealing with the right person and the right committee for the right job because this House, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Speaker Danladi Jatau, is committed to passing bills and resolutions that will impact the citizens.

“I want to assure you that your documents will reach the Speaker, and justice will be done to it,” Hon. Omadefu said.

Earlier, group leader Dr Michael David said the group, comprising NGOs, the media, civil society, and a network of disabled people, has been in the state for the last three years, championing the climate change movement, considering that Nasarawa is a flood-prone state.

He emphasised that the network seeks to enhance its partnership with the State Assembly on advocacy and other programmes that will mitigate environmental challenges and climate change.

“We seek to work together to promote and influence processes in the state to build a document framework and policy on climate-related issues,” he said.

He commended Hon. Muhammed Adamu Omadefu for granting them an audience and for his commitment to ensuring that issues relating to his committee on the environment are always brought to the forefront for prompt action.
