Amid political violence ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has demanded temporary shutdown of tertiary institutions in the state.
The Coordinator of NANS Southwest Zone D, Comrade Adeyemo Kayode, who spoke to journalists in Osogbo, yesterday, called on all relevant stakeholders to immediately engage recognised student leadership on practical measures to guarantee the safety of students throughout the election period.
“We reaffirm our call for the temporary and orderly suspension of academic activities across tertiary institutions in Osun State as a preventive measure to safeguard students.
“We expect meaningful engagement within seven days from the date of this press conference.
“In the absence of meaningful engagement within that period, NANS Southwest Zone D, in consultation with recognised student leadership, shall announce lawful, peaceful and democratic actions in defence of the safety and welfare of Nigerian students.
“We reiterate our call for a transparent conclusion of the investigation into the reported military operation involving students of Osun State University and appropriate accountability where necessary.
“We urge political actors to reject violence and conduct their campaigns peacefully.
“We direct all students to remain peaceful, vigilant and to continue conducting themselves in a lawful and responsible manner,” Kayode added.
