From Laide Raheem, Abeokuta
The leadership of the Senate of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on President Bola Tinubu to as a matter of urgency address the economic crunch confronting Nigerians.
NANS equally charged the president to arrest the unabated and increasing rate of security challenges across the country, particularly kidnapping of innocent students and Nigerians in general for ransom, attacks by bandits, attacks on security formations and killing of security men, and assassinations most especially in the South East and some states in Northern Nigerian.
Addressing newsmen in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the Senate President of NANS, Elvis Ekundina, lamented that the economic situation was becoming worrisome, saying, “a week will not pass without increase in the prices of commodities and services in the country.”
While expressing NANS displeasure on the increase in security challenges and series of attacks across the country, Ekundina urged President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on the country’s national security.
“It is ridiculous that on a daily basis Nigerian security agencies are losing their men to miscreants and unknown gunmen in the south east and some states in the northern part of the country.. The recent attack in some local governments in Plateau State where over two Hundred innocent Nigerians were murdered and thousands were displaced really showed the precarious state of our nation’s security. This is total lack of our intelligence gathering by most of our security agencies because this attacks were planned and executed with ease.
“We hereby call for comprehensive investigation of this senseless attacks and call on the Federal Government to make sure the perpetuators of the heinous crimes are brought to book and face the consequences of thier inhumane actions and activities. We equally call on Federal Government of Nigeria to charge the leadership of our nation’s security agencies to improve the intelligence gathering techniques to safe us of future attacks and counter attacks.
“We call on Mr. President to prioritize the security of all Nigerians and our properties as our right to live is a fundamental one as enshrined in the Nigeria constitution. If the serving Service Chiefs and other heads of our nation’s security and intelligence agencies cannot handle the situation, then, the President should do the needful in this regard by recruiting capable hands that will ensure we are secure Internally as a nation”, he stated.
