The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized counterfeit malaria drugs worth more than ₦1.2 billion in Lagos State.

The operation, which took place on Friday in the Ilasa-Oshodi area, led to the discovery of 277 cartons of fake and unregistered Malamal Forte tablets concealed inside a warehouse.

According to NAFDAC, the counterfeit medicines were illegally imported into the country from Shanxi Tianyuan Pharmaceuticals Group in China. The products had been disguised as spare parts and concealed in cartons labelled as Diclofenac Potassium 50mg in an attempt to evade detection at the ports.

NAFDAC, Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, confirmed the seizure and stressed that the agency would continue its aggressive clampdown on counterfeit medicines across the country.

She assured the public that NAFDAC, with the backing of the Presidency and the Federal Ministry of Health, remains resolute in its mission to safeguard Nigerians from dangerous and substandard medical products.

“The discovery marks another milestone in NAFDAC’s nationwide efforts to secure the pharmaceutical supply chain and ensure that only safe and effective medicines are made available to Nigerians.”

Adeyeye emphasised that the agency’s vigilance will remain steadfast, noting that counterfeit and unregistered medicines pose a grave threat to public health and must be eliminated completely from circulation.
