The 44 local government areas of Kano State have filed a lawsuit against the state government before a Federal High Court in Abuja over moves by the government to use their allocations to jointly finance an interchange project that will cost N27 billion, in the state capital.

Listed as co-defendants in the suit, which is currently before Justice Donatus Okorowo, are the Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice as well as the Accountant General of the state.

The plaintiffs along with the Kano State Chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) had on December 27, 2023 asked the court to restrain the state government from tampering with allocations meant for them.

Specifically, they asked the court to restrain the defendants, whether by themselves, their officers, servants, agents, privies, cronies or representatives from controlling, managing, further administering, disbursing and spending their funds and allocations held in the Kano State Joint Local Account, pending the determination of the case.

Ruling on the motion, however, the court ordered the state government to appear before it to show cause why the restraining order should not be granted.

The court also ordered that the processes be served on the defendants by substituted means.

It adjourned the case to January 3rd., 2024 when both parties are expected to appear before it.
