From George Onyejiuwa, Owerri
The detained Police officer, accused of killing a lawyer, Chinedu George Nwaowu, Imo State is allegedly being given an undue privileges in police custody.
Daily Sun gathered that despite being held in detention at a police facility in Owerri, the suspect has unrestricted access to his mobile phone.
It was equally gathered that he has been making calls, sending text messages, engaging in chats, and actively using his social media accounts, from within the detention facility.
Disturbingly, on Monday, April 8, it was learnt that the suspect reportedly contacted several friends and family members via phone calls and chat applications. One of the individuals who received an alleged threat message from the suspect, subsequently alerted Nwaowu family, raising fresh concerns about the level of access the suspect enjoys while still in custody.
Sources further revealed that,”Augustine frequently communicates with associates outside the detention centre and allegedly receives sensitive updates from police officers involved in the case.
“These communications reportedly include: information about the investigation and discussions around attempts to suppress the case”.
Daily Sun further gathered that the suspect, who is an Inspector of Police and his alleged accomplices :Uzoma , Amajuoyi and Jude, are purportedly exploring avenues to reach out to the Imo State government, in a bid to obstruct prosecution and avoid trial.
These developments have raised serious concerns about alleged possible collusion within the police force to shield Augustine from justice despite the conclusion of police investigations over a month ago,and the case file has reportedly not been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for arraignment.
Augustine was taken into custody in connection with the alleged murder of Nwaowu, a legal practitioner in Imo state.
