José Mourinho has defended Vinícius Júnior after the Brazilian forward was booed by sections of Real Madrid’s supporters during their 4-1 Champions League victory over RB Leipzig, insisting that his substitution was a tactical decision rather than a punishment for poor performance.
Vinícius was replaced in the 70th minute at the Santiago Bernabéu, with Mourinho introducing Yan Diomande and Endrick as he sought to bring different qualities into Madrid’s attack.
Speaking after the match, the Portuguese coach said he was satisfied with Vinícius’ performance and explained that having several attacking options allowed him to change the team’s approach during a game.
Mourinho also praised the Brazilian’s defensive contribution, noting that he had greater responsibilities in helping the team maintain its balance than some of Madrid’s other attacking players.
The manager added that Vinícius had avoided unnecessary losses of possession and created a dangerous scoring opportunity that forced an excellent save from Leipzig’s goalkeeper.
Addressing the reaction from supporters, Mourinho acknowledged that being booed by fans of one’s own club could affect any player emotionally. However, he maintained that only Vinícius himself could fully explain how he felt about the incident.
The substitution proved significant as Diomande later scored a superb volley in the 87th minute to complete Madrid’s 4-1 victory, after Kylian Mbappé had extended the lead with a spectacular effort from outside the penalty area.
Bernardo Silva and Arda Güler also scored for Madrid, while Tidiam Gomis found the net for Leipzig in the closing stages.
Mourinho reserved further praise for Fede Valverde, who impressed at right-back with his defensive work and attacking combinations with Güler and Bernardo Silva. However, he declined to confirm whether the Uruguayan would retain the position for Sunday’s El Clásico against Barcelona.
He also commended Eduardo Camavinga’s contribution in midfield and highlighted the importance of competition for places, pointing to Brahim Díaz as an example of a player who continues to work hard despite not regularly starting matches.
Madrid’s victory provides a confidence boost ahead of their meeting with Barcelona, but Mourinho’s comments have shifted attention towards Vinícius and the pressure he faces from sections of the club’s own supporters.
