Head coach of Morocco, Walid Regragui has reportedly resigned.
His purported resignation comes barely three weeks after the Atlas Lions’ loss in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Senegal.
Football transfer expert, said on Friday that Regragui turned in his resignation.
However, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) categorically denied the purported resignation, insisting that Regragui remained in his position.
On January 18, Regragui-tutored Morocco fell 1-0 in extra-time to Senegal in the AFCON final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
Senegal secured their second AFCON title in three tournaments, with Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye scoring the decisive goal in the 94th minute – a powerful left-footed strike into the top right corner from inside the penalty area.
The match was marred by controversy, including a late penalty awarded to Morocco in second-half stoppage time, which prompted Senegal to briefly threaten to walk off the pitch before a VAR review allowed the game to continue.
Morocco’s Brahim Díaz missed the spot-kick, paving the way for Senegal’s extra-time victory.

The defeat ended Morocco’s hopes of claiming their first AFCON title since 1976, despite hosting the tournament and entering as favorites after their historic semi-final run at the 2022 World Cup.
According to French outlet Foot Mercato, Regragui informed the FRMF of his desire to step down, taking responsibility for the final loss.
The 50-year-old coach, who has been at the helm since 2022, has been hailed as the architect of Morocco’s recent successes, including becoming the first African team to reach a World Cup semi-final.
However, speculation about his future intensified after he had previously hinted in press conferences that he would consider resigning if the team failed to win the AFCON.
In response, the FRMF issued a statement dismissing the resignation claims as “false” and emphasising the need for stability ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The federation hailed Regragui’s contributions and noted that president Fouzi Lekjaa has held meetings to review the AFCON campaign, acknowledging shortcomings but prioritising continuity to meet fan expectations.
Regragui’s tenure has transformed Moroccan football, but the final loss, coupled with an early exit in the 2023 AFCON, has led to calls from some journalists for his departure.
Reports have also linked him to potential club opportunities in Saudi Arabia, adding to the uncertainty.
