Africa’s top Scrabble players are set for a thrilling contest of intellect and strategy as Africa Scrabble Championship returns for its 16th edition in October, with a total prize pool of $35,000 at stake.
The week-long tournament is scheduled to take place from October 18 to 25, 2026, at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Monrovia, where players will compete over 32 rounds in what promises to be one of the most fiercely contested editions yet.
A top prize of $10,000 has been earmarked for the eventual champion, with leading players from across the continent expected to converge on Liberia in pursuit of continental glory and valuable ranking points.
The championship, organised by the Pan African Scrabble Association, will also reward consistency and performance depth, as cash prizes extend to the top 20 finishers.
Beyond the competition, the event underscores the continued rise of Scrabble as a major mind sport in Africa, with Liberia stepping into the spotlight as host of one of the continent’s premier intellectual sporting events.
Nigeria’s Oluwatimilehin Doko heads into the tournament as defending champion, while Nigeria will also look to retain the Best Country title secured at the last edition held in Kigali.
With anticipation building, attention will turn to Monrovia this October, where every move could prove decisive and every word may shape the outcome of Africa’s biggest Scrabble showdown.
