Management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has warned that any official or institution of higher learning which mobilises unqualified graduates in its approved list will be prosecuted.
The resolutions was reached at the 2017 Batch ‘A’ Pre-Mobilisation Workshop in Minna, Niger State. The management also advised Corp-producing institutions to ensure no unqualified graduate makes the Senate or Academic Board’s approved list for mobilisation into national service. In his keynote address, presented at the start of the business session, NYSC Director-General, Brigadier, Sulaiman Kazaure, disclosed that two institutions of higher learning were under investigation by regulatory bodies, for allegedly presenting unqualified persons to the Scheme for mobilisation. Noting that despite the effort of the NYSC to stem the tide of uploading unqualified corps members and graduates of part-time programmes, he lamented that few institutions had adopted new strategies to sustain the unwholesome practice.
“Among other things, the law excludes all non-holders of HND and first degree, graduates of institutions not recognised by the Federal Government and graduates of part-time programmes, etc. However, some institutions, even as lately as the last mobilisation exercise, assisted people in these mentioned categories to infiltrate the service corps,” he said.
Kazaure, warned that if found guilty, the two institutions would have appropriate sanctions meted out on them while graduates fraudulently presented for mobilisation would be withdrawn from service.
He further reminded corps producing institutions that as trainers of future leaders, they have the responsibility to guide their students to the right path, rather than abet forgery and other criminal tendencies.
Speaking further, Kazaure pleaded with Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDGs) to comply with the directives from the office of the Secretary to the Government of Federation (SGF) not to reject corps members posted to them.
He told newsmen, after declaring open the 2017 Press and Public Relations Officers Workshop in Abuja, that the management of the scheme has followed up the directive from the SGF with circulars to the MDGs.
“We have done our part; we have sent out circulars to all parastatals. Some are complying, some not; but we will continue to try our best in appealing to them to comply fully,” he said.
While commenting on the workshop, he said: “It is a continuation of management’s commitment at ensuring that officers saddled with the responsibility of managing the image of the scheme are equipped with the right knowledge and skills for better performance, and to keep them abreast of developments in the business of information, crisis and client relations management.
“You may wish to recall our recent challenges resulting from the misconception of our operations by a section of the public. Such challenges underscore the need to resuscitate training of this nature. I have noted with satisfaction, the impressive performance of a good number of the Scheme’s Public Relations Offices, both at the National headquarters and the states I visited for official engagements.
“I use this opportunity to commend you for the zeal, commitment and professionalism with which you have discharged your duties. I urge you to remain focused in line with our determination to enhance operational efficiency in all ramification. Management on its part will continue to provide the enabling environment for you to perform optimally,” he noted.
