Residents of Nsukka, in Enugu State, have received with mixed reactions, the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari for another four years, following his declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), yesterday, as winner of last Saturday’s presidential election.
While some residents, who spoke with Daily Sun, described the president’s re-election as a good omen that would take the country to the next level, others said it would be another four years of suffering and bad economy for Nigerians.
Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nsukka Local Government Area, Joseph Ugwuoke, said he was happy with the re-election of Buhari because it would bring more human and infrastructure development in the country.
“Nigerians voted him for a second term because he has done well in his first tenure. Every sector of the economy has witnessed transformation, especially agriculture; you can see food items are everywhere at cheaper prices,” he said.
Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Nsukka Local Government Area, Fabian Onah, said Buhari’s re-election means another four years of suffering for Nigerians and the economy.
“It’s during Buhari ‘s present administration that Nigeria became the poverty capital of the world. To me, his re-election is another four years of suffering for Nigerians .
Onah, however, said it was PDP that Nigerians voted for in last Saturday’s presidential poll, but APC hijacked the mandate of Atiku Abubakar.
Ikechukwu Ugwuegede, the candidate of APC in Nsukka/Igboeze south Federal Constituency in last Saturday’s election, described Buhari’s re-election as a good omen for Nigeria, as it would take the country to the next level.
“The president will use the next four years to finish the good work his administration has started across the country. It will be another four years of good governance, accountability and fighting of corruption, because everybody knows Mr President has zero tolerance for corruption,” he said.
Ozoemena Desmond, a businessman, who deals on building materials, said he would have preferred Atiku to win because his business had suffered setback in the past three years since Buhari became president.
“The harsh economy in the country under the present administration affected my business negatively, he said.
“I could have preferred Atiku to win, so that there will be a new approach to the management of our economy,”he said.
