Military troops from the Joint Task Force Northeast Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) stopped a car that was carrying suspected terrorists, and two of them had injuries that were linked to previous terror attacks in Yobe State.

The spokesman of the counter-terrorism operation in the North-East, Lt Col Sani Uba, said in a statement that the two men with injuries were suspected to be among terrorists encountered by troops recently.

“Troops intercepted a vehicle conveying terrorist elements in Yobe State. Two of the occupants were identified with gunshot wounds linked to earlier engagements with troops,” he disclosed.

He explained that the terrorists and communication devices recovered from them are in military custody for further investigation.

He said troops also successfully conducted operations in Borno, including uncovering landmines and improvised explosive devices buried along the Pulka–Ngoshe road, a route near a town recently recaptured by the military.

He added that the successful detonation of the landmines and IEDs helped in preventing “potential casualties and ensuring safe movement along the route.”

Uba disclosed that some individuals suspected to be logistics suppliers to terrorists were also intercepted in Geidam, Yobe State, by troops of Sector 2 of OPHK in conjunction with operatives of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), following an intelligence report.

“Following a fierce encounter, three terrorists were neutralised while a logistics-laden vehicle was disabled. Recovered items included food supplies, mobile phones and other materials intended for terrorist camps,” he disclosed.

Police bury slain officers

Meanwhile, the police in Borno have buried four of their personnel killed last Saturday in a terrorist attack at Ngazai in the northern part of the state.

The remains of late Inspector Samuel Ezekiel of Nganzai Division, Inspector Sanusi Mohammed of 58 PMF Lafiya, Police Constable Bitrus Luka of Crack Squad BRS, and Police Constable Shaibu Bukar of Crack Squad BRS were laid to rest on Sunday, according to the Borno State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Nahum Daso.

“The solemn interment ceremony took place at the Kawar Maila Burial Ground and the Maximum Prison Burial Ground, Maiduguri, in accordance with religious rites,” Daso announced in a statement yesterday.

The deaths of the four policemen underscore the fluid security situation in Borno and parts of Yobe and Adamawa states, as terrorists intensify attacks in these areas.

Early Sunday morning, suspected Boko Haram insurgents raided Awapul, a remote community in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, as residents were sleeping. The terrorists burnt houses and destroyed other property before fleeing the community.

The attack came a day after a similar incident at Dapachi in Yobe State. A vigilante was killed in the attack.
