Amnesty International Nigeria said the Bola Tinubu administration has not properly guided low-income earners on mitigating the impact of the fuel price crisis occasioned by ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The human rights group stated this in a statement posted on Facebook on Monday.

The United States and Israel launched a military onslaught on Iran on February 28.

The conflict has disrupted the global oil economy, especially with the closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, with impact manifested in fuel price increment and inflation in Nigeria and other parts of the globe.

Amnesty said that President Tinubu must “put in place a transparent and effective measures to cushion the effect of the current rising fuel price — which is also escalating the price of food, transport, health care and other services”.

The group said the war in the Middle East is gradually taking a toll on the lives and livelihood of millions of families that have already been living in abject poverty.

It warned that many people were increasingly concerned that they would be unable to meet the costs of education, food and healthcare.

Amnesty said, “The government is yet to suggest any ways to mitigate the impact of this fuel price crisis on people on low incomes.

“In Nigeria, people living in poverty have no any form of social protection to mitigate the impact of economic shocks. Government largely unroll opaque ‘palliatives’ marred by corruption and politics. Therefore they never benefit those in need.”
