Gonzalez, 52, has signed a contract with the reigning MLS Cup champions until June 2028 after completing the necessary work documentation in the United States.
The Argentine replaces Guillermo Hoyos, who had been in charge on an interim basis following Javier Mascherano’s departure in April. Hoyos stepped in from his role as the club’s sporting director during the transition.
Gonzalez’s arrival comes at a difficult period for Inter Miami, who have struggled for consistency despite boasting a squad led by Messi and several established stars.
The club have won only one of their last five regular-season matches and remain second in the Eastern Conference, nine points behind leaders Nashville, according to the latest standings cited in the report.
Gonzalez is expected to bring his experience from Argentine football to Miami, having previously managed Rosario Central, Unión Santa Fe and Platense after beginning his coaching career in 2020.
As a player, Gonzalez earned 56 caps for Argentina between 1995 and 2005 and represented prominent European clubs including Inter Milan and Valencia, as well as Rosario Central.
His first major task will be to steady an Inter Miami side that remains in contention for honours but needs improved results, with his first training session scheduled ahead of Wednesday’s Campeones Cup clash against Mexican club Cruz Azul.
