As escalating conflicts across the Middle East continue to threaten critical global shipping routes, maritime expert and Managing Director of Vega Solutions Ltd, Joy Uchechukwu Mba, has intensified efforts to strengthen maritime energy supply chains, positioning Nigeria and Africa to better withstand disruptions capable of triggering fuel shortages, rising inflation and supply chain instability.

The focus comes as the global maritime community commemorates the International Day of the Seafarer under the theme, “Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks,” highlighting the growing dangers faced by seafarers navigating increasingly volatile waters, including the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf and other strategic maritime corridors.

Industry experts note that the uninterrupted movement of petroleum products and other strategic cargoes remains critical to economic stability, with even temporary disruptions capable of causing sharp increases in fuel prices and shortages across several countries.

Mba’s leadership has therefore centred on strengthening operational resilience through proactive risk management while ensuring that maritime personnel remain adequately trained, protected and supported.

Unlike many industry leaders whose focus rests solely on operations, Mba has distinguished herself by placing the welfare of seafarers at the heart of maritime sustainability.

A licensed Human Resources professional with advanced certification from the University of Southampton, she has supervised the career development, deployment and welfare of more than 500 maritime professionals while training over 1,000 mariners to international standards.

Her emphasis on crew welfare, mental health support and continuous professional development has become increasingly significant as seafarers face mounting security concerns arising from missile attacks, drone threats and piracy in some of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

Beyond corporate leadership, Mba has continued to influence maritime policy and research.

Her publication, Enhancing Maritime Navigational Safety and Security in the Niger Delta, examines security challenges affecting one of Africa’s most strategic maritime regions, offering practical recommendations on piracy prevention, navigational safety, regulatory compliance and community engagement.

She also contributes research on maritime security, operational safety and training methodologies through ResearchGate, ensuring that evidence-based practices inform both policy discussions and operational decision-making.

Speaking on this year’s International Day of the Seafarer, Mba stressed that protecting those working at sea must remain central to global trade resilience.

“The theme of this year’s International Day of the Seafarer, ‘Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks,’ is a powerful reminder that seafarers must never become economic collateral in geopolitical conflicts. True supply chain resilience begins with strong corporate policies that protect both the physical safety and mental well-being of those working at sea. At Vega Solutions Ltd, we remain committed to safeguarding our people while ensuring uninterrupted maritime energy supply for nations that depend on global shipping.”

As the maritime industry confronts challenges ranging from geopolitical instability to decarbonisation and technological transformation, industry observers say leaders such as Mba are becoming increasingly important in developing sustainable solutions that balance commercial efficiency with the welfare of seafarers.
