The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohamed Marwa (Rtd), yesterday, conducted an on-the-spot assessment of an industrial-scale clandestine methamphetamine laboratory uncovered in a remote forest within Ijebu East Local Government, Ogun State.

In a statement,Director, Media & Advocacy, NDLEA,Femi Babafemi, explained that the visit followed a recent major operation by the Agency which led to the recovery of 2,419.48 kilograms of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of over N480 billion, and the arrest of a drug baron, three Mexican nationals, and six Nigerian accomplices linked to the illicit drug syndicate.

Speaking at the site, Gen. Marwa described the laboratory as one of the largest meth production hubs uncovered in Nigeria, noting that the scale of operations points to a sophisticated transnational drug network.

“This discovery is evidence that drug cartels are attempting to establish industrial-scale production bases in our country. The NDLEA will not relent. We are going after the kingpins, their assets, and their networks until Nigeria is free from the scourge of illicit drugs,” Marwa stated.

“He commended the professionalism and bravery of NDLEA operatives who carried out the intelligence-led operation, and reiterated the Agency’s commitment to dismantling all clandestine laboratories and blocking the supply chain of illicit substances.

“ Marwa also called for stronger collaboration with local communities, traditional institutions, and other security agencies to ensure that remote forests and border areas do not become safe havens for drug production.

“The NDLEA boss assured Nigerians that all suspects arrested in connection with the illicit laboratory will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
