A section of a two-storey residential building collapsed on Saturday morning in Abuja, its rubble trapping several people.

The Sunday Sun learnt that the building located beside a popular hotel on Sultan Dasuki Way in Kubwa, was formerly a hotel, Al-Hilal. It was later converted to a hospital. Since the hospital owners left the facility, it had become a residential apartment.

While emergency responders and security personnel were on ground, rescue efforts, were however, hampered, as the cranes needed for the rescue could not get to the venue at about 8:45am, nearly two hours after the incident.

Two persons were, however, rushed to a nearby hospital, while a few others escaped on their own.

One of the escapees who did not want to reveal her identity, said when she woke up around 7am and came out of the house, she began hearing some cracking sounds and then ran out.
