A 38-year-old man, Adekunle Rotimi, was yesterday arraigned by the Osun state police command before a Magistrate’s court sitting in Osogbo, for attempting to kill a woman police within the court premises.
The police prosecutor, Anifowose Saheed, told the court that the defendant attempted to kill a woman police,Babatunde Omotayo, when he wanted to run away from court on February 18, 2025.
He alleged that the defendant grabbed the woman police in the neck inside fish pond and wanted to strangulate her.
But, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the two count charges of attempt to escape from court and attempt to kill leveled against him.
His counsel, Dauda Oyewale, urged the court to grant him bail in a liberal term, saying the alleged offences were bailable in law.
However, the prosecutor urged the court to decline the bail, saying that the defendant was standing trial on the day he attempted to run away, and granting him bail would jeopardize the prosecution.
According to the police, the defendant was remanded for unlawful possession of firearms and he told the prison officer that he wanted to urinate when he made effort to run away and he wanted to kill the woman police who followed him.
Counsel to the defendant, urged the court to discountenance the claim of the prosecutor that granting defendant bail would jeopardize prosecution, saying that his claims were opinion and speculation which has no place in law.
Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara, thereby, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2 million with one surety in like sum, saying that the surety must be a land owner in the state.
Ayilara subsequently adjourned the case to May 8, for hearing.
