The Labour Party (LP) has disowned Abayomi Arabambi, who instituted a suit seeking the academic records of its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The party said Arabambi was no longer its member and could not have instituted the action in the capacity of an LP chieftain, contrary to reports describing him as such.
In a statement, yesterday, National Publicity Secretary of the party, Barrister Ken Asogwa, said the clarification became necessary following reports in mainstream media describing Arabambi as an LP chieftain.
“While the Labour Party wishes to refrain from commenting on the substance or otherwise of the litigant’s case before the court, particularly as Mr. Peter Obi is not a member of the Party, the Labour Party wishes to notify the general public that Abayomi Arabambi is not a member of the Labour Party,” Asogwa said.
According to the party, its National Executive Council (NEC), on March 18, 2026, suspended 25 members, including Arabambi, over alleged anti-party activities.
It said the decision was subsequently ratified by its National Convention on April 28, 2026, after which the affected persons ceased to be members of the party.
“The suspension was subsequently ratified by the National Convention of the Party, the highest decision-making organ of the Labour Party, on 28th April 2026. Following the said ratification, the affected members ceased to be members of the Party.
“It is also worth mentioning that, since the above decision was taken by the Labour Party, no organ of the Party has sat to revisit or reverse the decision concerning the expelled members.”

LP said Arabambi, therefore, had no authority to present himself as its chieftain or representative in connection with the litigation.
“It is therefore against this background that the Labour Party wishes to inform the general public, and particularly the media, that Abayomi Arabambi is not a member of the Labour Party and could not have instituted any action in court as a member of the Party, having long severed ties with the Labour Party.”
The party went further to warn that any representation by Arabambi that he remained an LP chieftain was unauthorised, adding that its lawyers were considering possible action.
“If Abayomi Arabambi has presented himself to the public as a chieftain or representative of the Labour Party, the general public is hereby notified that such representation is entirely unauthorised and, prima facie, amounts to impersonation.
“The matter is currently being reviewed by the Party’s lawyers for the purpose of determining the appropriate legal and other steps that may be taken, including a possible petition to the relevant law enforcement authorities.”
The party, however, distanced its clarification from the substance of Arabambi’s case against Obi, stressing that it was neither endorsing nor challenging the claims before the court.
It said: “This press release is issued solely to clarify the alleged relationship between the litigant and the Labour Party and has no bearing whatsoever on the validity or otherwise of his claims against Mr. Peter Obi before the court.”
LP said it hoped the clarification would put to rest questions over Arabambi’s status and his relationship with the party.
