Anthony Joshua is recovering at the hospital in Lagos after a serious car accident in which he complained of pain in his legs while being rescued from the wreckage.
The heavyweight boxing champion is being treated at Duchess International Hospital in Lagos, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s leading private medical facilities. Joshua is said to be in a stable condition following the crash, which tragically claimed the lives of two close members of his team — his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, and his personal trainer, Latif “Latz” Ayodele.
Witnesses at the scene said the impact of the crash was so loud that many initially believed it was an explosion. As people rushed to help, Joshua was heard complaining of pain in his leg while survivors called on bystanders to assist those trapped in the vehicles.
Nigeria’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, confirmed that he personally spoke with Joshua after the accident and also contacted his mother, who had rushed to the hospital to be by her son’s side. Tinubu said Joshua reassured him that he was receiving excellent medical care as doctors monitored his condition.
“I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates,” Tinubu said. “I wished him well and prayed for his recovery. He assured me he is being well taken care of.”
The president also said he spoke with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was present at the hospital, and was assured that everything possible was being done to support Joshua’s recovery.
The crash occurred shortly after 11am on Monday on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Makun, southwest Nigeria, as Joshua was travelling to visit family. The Lexus SUV he was in collided with a stationary truck, leaving the vehicle completely destroyed. Images from the scene showed the doors torn off and the roof crushed, while another vehicle believed to be part of his convoy was left undamaged nearby.
Tributes quickly poured in from across the boxing world. Matchroom chairman Eddie Hearn described Ghami and Ayodele as “two great men,” offering his prayers to their families. Boxer Chris Eubank Jr also paid his respects, expressing relief that Joshua survived while honouring the two men who lost their lives.
Joshua continues to receive treatment as doctors assess his injuries, including the leg pain reported at the scene of the accident.
