The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has just carried out the All-Africa Service Project (AASP), an annual community service initiative that holds every August with the active participation of every member of the church across the continent.
This year’s exercise took place penultimate week and was carried out by all members in the various stakes in Lagos.
The AASP is built around the principle of following Jesus Christ by loving and serving one’s neighbours. It provides an opportunity for members, friends and community partners to work together to make a practical difference in their communities.
The All-Africa Service Project remains a major expression of Christlike service, unity and community partnership across Africa. The initiative began in 2006, and by 2009, it had already become a significant Africa-wide service effort, with members in more than 30 countries participating in activities such as road repairs, cleaning drainage, environmental cleanup, painting, tree planting, blood donation and assistance to hospitals and community institutions.
The exercise was held simultaneously at the Ojodu, Yaba, Ikeja and Festac stakes.

In a chat with the media, Chibueze Ohaegbulem, Project Coordinator, Ojodu Stake, explained that the exercise was not funded by the Church as a body, but rather, it was done through individual contributions by members purely as a form of charity. Meanwhile, for bigger projects, as the need arises, the Church would always be involved.
At the Ojodu Stake, bush around Shimawa roundabout was cleared, while Shimawa Health Centre and High School got a facelift as they were painted.
The Festac Stake did their project at the Spinal Cord Injury Association of Nigeria centre in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, where they painted the health centre and cleared the bush around it, as well as partnering with Clarion Care Home and Senior Living.
Yaba Stake carried out their project by donating blood, in partnership with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
Similarly, Ikeja Stake fumigated the Makinde Police Station. They also embarked on painting the Primary Healthcare Centre, while Lekki stake cleaned Badore Health Centre, Ajah.
