The Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Oto-Ijanikin, has made history in the Nigerian University System (NUS) with the introduction of Security App, which is used to rescue students in danger.
The security app was put into operation this year and the current 100-level students have been included in the system.
Vice Chancellor of LASUED, Prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye, disclosed the introduction of the security app at the university’s maiden Security Summit, which attracted stakeholders and several traditional rulers.
She explained that the security app was introduced to enable LASUED security personnel respond to students in distress outside the campus and rescue them from danger.
“We operate off-campus system and our students live among our host communities. The security app was introduced this year to rescue any of our students in distress.
“Any of our students in trouble is required to activate the app and our security personnel will know their location. Once the signal is received, our security personnel will swing into action and rescue such student in danger,” Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye stated.
The LASUED VC described the summit as historical, being the first tertiary institution in Lagos State and the need to secure the lives of students and staff.
She recalled that the university was established in 2022 and runs 66 courses, stating, “LASUED has come to stay and there is need for concern about security challenges.”
According to her, the maiden security summit is a collective approach to provide adequate security for students and staff.
The VC assured stakeholders that the security summit would be annual event and advised students to be security conscious.
The Ijanikin Divisional Police Officer, CSP Afolabi Kazeem told the gathering, which include Lagos State government officials that as a university; the first thing that occupy the minds of students is their security within and outside the campus.
Kazeem advised the university management to accord security top priority, provide CCTV camera and assured the institution that the security agencies would work together to ensure adequate security for students and staff.
Representative of National Drugs Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Dick Mulikat Adunni said the agency acknowledged importance of security in the university but revealed that drug abuse is distracting Nigerian youths from achieving their goals.
Adunni stated that security agencies, lecturers and community leaders have the responsible to rid the society of drug abuse among youths.
She stressed that to rid the campuses of drug abuse, the NDLEA official called for collective efforts and collaboration among sister agencies and warned that drug abuse has moved to primary schools.
Representatives of FRSC, Customs and DSS commended the LASUED management for the security summit and pledged to work together to ensure that the students and staff are protected.
Commissioner for Tertiary Education, who was represented by Dr. Yemi Omoloye, director of monitoring and investigations unit lauded the university for the security summit and stressed that the ministry would support LASUED efforts.
Traditional rulers who spoke at the summit advised students of LASUED to be security conscious and advised them to steer clear of crimes.
The Obas assured the university management that as host of the various communities where the students live, they would continue to monitor their well being.
