Former Jigawa state governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido and his former Kaduna state counterpart, Sen.Ahmed Mohammed Makrafi have canvassed active youths involvement in the governance process of the country.
But to achieve this, the two leaders were unanimous in advocating the need for the youths to imbibe the culture of tolerance, perseverance and time- honoured tradition of respect for the foundation laid by the country’s founding fathers built on ideological convictions.
The two former governors spoke at the one-day lecture organized to mark the former Jigawa state governor’s 78th birthday anniversary in Dutse on Sunday attended by political associates and admirers.
The former Kaduma state governor who chaired the occasion with the theme: Re-orienting the youths on politics of ideology towards rebuilding a New Nigeria’ described the timing of the discussion as apt, considering the approach of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, “The timing of this discussion is very apt, this is a topic that the former Jigawa state governor and I have always been discussing and he has always been very concerned about the future of our youths, which I also share.”
Makarfi, a former National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)added that while the youths from other parts of the country appear focused on their objectives, the same cannot be said of the youths from the northern part of country especially that of the Northwest.
His words, “Youths in the Northwest particularly are presently in the state of confusion. In the Southwest and South South, the youths there appear focused, why is it that the youths from the Northwest should be allowed to be drifting aimlessly?”
“Some of us have chosen to remain in the PDP despite the fact that it’s not in a perfect shape at the moment due to our ideological conviction. So with 2027 elections fast approaching, I urge the youths from the northwest to teach out to their peers from the other parts of the country so that they imbibe some of those qualities of leadership with a view to translating same in their immediate environment.”
Lamido, while speaking at the occasion, he chose to mark his birthday with a reflection and in solidarity with the current state of the youths especially from the Northern part of the.
He added, that rather than organizing an elaborate celebration where serving and present leaders would come and dine and wine, he chose to reflect on the current state of the youths of the country.
He lamented, ” Those of us who benefitted from the leadership qualities of our founding fathers like the Sardauna of Sokoto, Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa among others have failed to teach the younger generation of leaders who we expect to take over from us, in stead we have turned them to political thugs.
According to him, whoever is 25 years old today would become a leader in this country in the ext 30-35 years so f they are taught the quality of leadership how would they give the next generation the kind of leadership qualities they require?
A former Inspector -General of Police and the Senatorial candidate of the PDP for Jigawa Southwest Senatorial District, Dr. Suleiman Abba commended the vision of the former governor for organizing the lecture as part of his concern for the next generation of leaders in the country.
He said the gesture would definitely inspire some of them who are hoping to aspire for the leadership position, especially during the forthcoming general elections.
