Lagos State government has assured of continuous cooperation with the military to ensure better life for families of soldiers and officers within barracks in the state.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this known at the weekend commended the leadership of the Army in their efforts towards enhancing national cohesion through the promotion of the nation’s rich cultural heritage between its officers and the general public.
Sanwo-Olu who was represented by the Oba of Onigbongbo , Oba Adeyemi Ajasa at the West African Social Activities hosted by 9 Brigade of the army, commended the tenacity and leadership of the unit, its officers and soldiers. He said the unit and its men have proven their mettle of leadership, by changing the narrative of the Army from that of the most vilified to the most commended Army by making sure an activity like WASA that promotes the rich cultural heritage of the Nigerian people was still up and running in the barracks.
The monarch tasked Nigerians to learn to live together as one, saying the Onigbongbo community, the host community to the Ikeja Cantonment, was happy to have the army within its domain. He said the presence of the military serves as deterrence for would be invaders.
General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Major Gen.l Obinna Ajunwa, represented by the Brigade Commander, Brig. Gen. Isang Akpaumontia commended soldiers who were awarded for their diligence.
The GOC commended troops of the Brigade who were deployed to participate in OPERATION HADIN KAI, pleading with the families of the officers and soldiers to bear with the force as their bread winners would soon return.
He assured that the Army now has a policy, where soldiers fighting in theatres of operations are not allowed to stay long in the field.
He also reminded officers and soldiers to be conscious of their behavior within and outside the barracks, noting that whatever behavior exhibited outside the barracks rubs off on the force
