A three-storey building housing Equal Rights Restaurant and Bar collapsed at 10 Oremeta Street, Ojodu-Berger, on Saturday, April 19, trapping several victims under debris.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) received distress alerts at 09:45 hrs and activated its Emergency Response Plans, with response teams arriving by 09:52 hrs.

Eight victims have been rescued so far, with one transported to a hospital for further treatment, and no fatalities reported as of this report.

The cause of the collapse remains under investigation, amid concerns over structural safety in Lagos, where 19 similar incidents occurred in 2024, according to LASEMA records.

The agency’s heavy-duty equipment, including an excavator, has been deployed to aid rescue efforts, with the operational area cordoned off for safety.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing, supported by multiple agencies, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASTMA, FRSC, Nigerian Police Force, and LASBCA.

The incident has drawn comparisons to a January 2025 collapse in Ikota, where two died and five were injured, underscoring persistent issues with unregulated construction.

LASEMA’s Response Teams from Alausa and Onipanu, alongside LASAMBUS and the LASEMA Pre-Hospital Care Unit, are working tirelessly. The Chairman of Ojodu LCDA and representatives are also present, coordinating efforts at the scene.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed condolences and reiterated calls for stricter adherence to building codes.

As investigations into the collapse continue, the public awaits updates on the rescue operation and the condition of those still trapped.
