Lagos govt discovers syndicate using waste materials to reclaim swampy land

Swampy land

The Lagos State Government has uncovered a syndicate that uses waste materials to reclaim swampy land, which is then sold fraudulently to unsuspecting members of the public.

Managing Director, Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin disclosed that this was exposed when operatives of the agency in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps sealed an illegal dumpsite discovered at Oduntan Street in Ketu area of the state.

In an X post on Saturday, the LAWMA boss said the site, which was being commercially operated by unidentified individuals, had become a serious environmental threat.

He said, “These operators were using waste materials to reclaim swampy land, which was then fraudulently sold to unsuspecting members of the public.

“This unlawful activity not only posed a major risk to public health and safety but also violated multiple provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law.”

Gbadegesin noted that the area has now been sealed off pending clearance and remediation.

“Investigations are ongoing to identify the individuals behind this operation.

“We once again urge all residents to comply with environmental laws and desist from patronising or supporting illegal waste disposal activities,” the LAWMA boss added.
