The Federal High Court in Lagos State has convicted Dr. Anuoluwapo Adepoju, a cosmetic surgeon and founder of MedContour Services Ltd., for her involvement in the failed plastic surgery that led to the death of Nneka Onwuzuligbo in 2020, according to a report by FIJ.

The conviction was announced by Babatunde Irukera, the former Director-General of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), who took to Twitter to share the news. “Today is a day of pride for me that I personally prosecuted Anu Adepoju and her medical practice. Though I’ve left, the case has ended in a conviction, strengthening the accountability framework for all in society, professionals or otherwise,” Irukera tweeted.

Dr. Adepoju was convicted on all five counts charged by the FCCPC. The case was presided over by Justice Mohammed Liman. The charges stemmed from allegations that Dr. Adepoju had ignored multiple summonses by the FCCPC to appear and provide specific documents related to her practice.

Irukera emphasized the importance of this conviction for consumer protection and professional accountability. “The wheel of justice may grind slowly, but we must see it through. What we need are enforced with audacity and the will to prosecute competently and diligently. Good day for consumers of professional services,” he noted.

The case against Dr. Adepoju has been closely watched since 2020 when the FCCPC initially arraigned her on charges related to the botched surgery. The conviction marks a significant step in reinforcing the legal responsibilities of medical professionals and ensuring consumer safety in Nigeria.
