Lagos, CIOD forge alliance to deepen governance, leadership excellence

By Henry Uche

The Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria has reaffirmed its readiness to partner with the Lagos State Government to deepen governance excellence, strengthen leadership capacity and promote sustainable development in line with global best practices.

The President and Chairman of the Governing Council of CIoD, Otunba Adetunji Oyebanji, gave this assurance when he led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the state governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at Government House, Marina.

Addressing the governor and some of his cabinet members, the CIoD president explained his administration’s mantra of IMPACT: Integrity, Meritocracy, Professionalism, Accountability, Customer-centricity and Teamwork, and his vision anchored on ICE (Implementation, Collaboration and Engagement).

He assured the state governor that his management team is committed to driving the institute’s mandate of nurturing ethical leadership and professional integrity, as well as building a prosperous, dignified and globally competitive Lagos State.

While applauding Governor Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support and the exemplary cooperation of the Lagos State Civil Service, Oyebanji, on behalf of the institute, sought the governor’s assistance in the construction of the institute’s project.

The support, he affirmed, is vital to fulfilling the institute’s mandate of providing a world-class environment for nurturing ethical leadership and professional integrity.

“On the CIoD House and future re-engagement, we are here to update His Excellency on the progress of our flagship project, the CIoD House. Physical construction has not yet commenced, following a deliberate and strategic decision by the institute’s leadership in response to prevailing economic realities. This period has been utilised to reassess and strengthen our development roadmap, ensuring that it is resilient, sustainable and future-ready.

“Our objective extends beyond the construction of an office facility to the establishment of a centre of excellence that reflects contemporary standards of corporate governance.

“Building on this strong foundation, the institute intends to formally re-engage with the state government in the coming months as we transition to the next phase of development. We look forward to further aligning our efforts with the state’s urban development objectives, ensuring that the CIoD House stands as a lasting symbol of the productive partnership between the institute and Lagos State.

“Both the CIoD Nigeria and the Government of Lagos State share a firm belief in integrity, performance, accountability and transformative leadership,” Oyebanji maintained.

In response, the state governor declared that the state’s continued growth and resilience is a function of strong governance and unwavering accountability, stressing that Lagos can only truly thrive when leadership remains transparent, responsible and firmly committed to delivering results for its citizens.

He appreciated the discourse he had with CIoD in areas of leadership, corporate governance, the Lagos International Financial Centre, Invest Lagos 3.0 and on the role institutions must play in strengthening both the public and private sectors.

“Lagos thrives when governance is strong, and accountability is taken seriously. I commend the institute’s commitment to raising standards and shaping ethical leadership across the country,” he noted.
