Lagos State House of Assembly has called on the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to relocate tank farms at Apapa to a less congested area.
The Assembly said the tank farms cause traffic gridlock and endanger lives of the residents.
Mojisola Miranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, raised the issue during yesterday’s plenary, under ‘matter of urgent public importance’ and said activities of the truck drivers in Apapa were not only affecting traffic in the area, but that it has extended to other parts of the state.
She urged the Assembly to invite the state’s acting Commissioner for Transport and Managing Director of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), to explain how they could handle the matter.
Speaker Mudashiru Obasa said the House should not wait till the affected officials were invited for briefing, but that necessary steps should be taken urgently to handle the situation.
“We will definitely call on LASTMA officials of and the Lagos State Safety Commission on the matter but is better we caution the truck drivers to stop parking on the roads and bridges.
“We also have to call on the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, to provide alternative routes for motorists, while construction of roads at Tin Can Island are ongoing. Meanwhile, tank farms should be relocated from the area,” Obasa said.
