Labour Party signals 2027 showdown, elects new Adamawa EXCO

From Billy Graham Abel

The Labour Party (LP) has declared its readiness to challenge all political parties across every contestable seat in the 2027 general elections, following the successful election of a new Adamawa State executive through a consensus process.

The state elective congress, held Saturday at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Labour House in Yola, produced a new leadership led by State Chairman, Theman Jonah, in an exercise widely adjudged peaceful, credible, and hitch-free.

The congress was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alongside security agencies and party stakeholders, all of whom commended the orderly conduct of the exercise.

In his acceptance speech, Jonah set the tone for what he described as a “new era of political strength and expansion”, declaring that the Labour Party is fully prepared to contest and win elections at all levels in 2027.

“We are repositioned, united, and ready. The Labour Party will challenge every party in all elective positions, from the State Assembly to the governorship and beyond,” he said.

He called on aggrieved members to return, stressing that the party had resolved all internal disputes and litigations.

“There is no faction in the Labour Party today. All court cases, from the Supreme Court to the lower courts, have been dismissed. This is the time to rebuild and take over governance,” Jonah stated.

He further assured that the new leadership would provide a level playing field for credible aspirants, particularly youths, while advancing policies centred on family welfare and inclusive governance.

The successful conduct of the congress drew commendation from INEC’s Election Party Monitoring Team, which described the process as transparent and worthy of emulation by other political parties.

The chairman of the congress committee also praised the peaceful outcome, attributing it to improved internal cohesion and strong national leadership.

He noted that the party had undergone a period of internal restructuring but had emerged stronger and more united.

“When the current national leadership came on board, there were doubts in some quarters. But today, the party is stable, organised, and focused. What we have seen in Adamawa is a reflection of that renewed direction,” he said.

Also speaking, Comrade Domgelma affirmed that the process was free, fair, and devoid of disputes, adding that earlier legal challenges had been conclusively resolved. He expressed confidence that the party’s renewed unity would translate into electoral success in 2027.

On his part, Comrade Lucas dismissed concerns about the party’s preparedness, revealing that aspirants have already begun positioning themselves for various offices, including the governorship, National Assembly, and state legislative seats.

“There is no vacuum. Serious aspirants are already on ground. The structure is being strengthened, and the momentum is building towards 2027,” he said.

Jonah also addressed concerns about the party’s national outlook, insisting that the Labour Party remains a formidable force regardless of individual political movements. According to him, the party’s performance in the 2023 elections, where it secured seats in the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly, demonstrates its growing acceptance and capacity.

“We are building on that foundation. In 2027, we will not only compete, we will dominate,” he declared.

INEC officials at the event urged the newly elected executives to sustain the spirit of internal democracy and maintain close collaboration with the commission in preparation for future elections.

With a united front, renewed leadership, and bold electoral ambition, the Labour Party in Adamawa appears set to position itself as a major contender in the political landscape ahead of 2027.
