The Kwara State Police Command has launched full-scale operations to combat arms violence in Ilesha Baruba and banditry in Kemanji, both in Kwara North, following deadly incidents on April 21.

Police spokesperson Ejire-Adetoun Adeyemi announced the measures in a statement released on April 22 in Ilorin.

The statement read: “Gunmen launch deadly attack in Ilesha Baruba, leaving six dead; one vigilante killed during forest patrol in Kemanji. Police arrest informant linked to bandit network as tactical efforts intensify across affected regions.”

Investigations focus on two incidents in Baruten and Kaiama Local Government Areas. At approximately 21:30, ten suspected armed men stormed Ilesha Baruba Motor Park, firing indiscriminately at civilians at a nearby relaxation spot. Six individuals—Alhaji Ja’awire, AbdulJabar, Mohammed Nasamu, and three others—were killed, and two others sustained serious injuries. The deceased were taken to Ilesha Baruba Morgue for autopsy, and the injured are receiving treatment.

Earlier that day at 11:30, a Kemanji-based vigilante group clashed with suspected bandits in Kainji National Park. The statement noted: “In the course of the gun duel, three of the suspected bandits suffered fatal gunshot wounds, and a member of the vigilante, Yusuf Samba ‘M’ was shot and later succumbed to a gunshot injury.” Police arrested an informant collaborating with the bandits, who is aiding the investigation.

The command stated, “The Kwara State Police Command assures residents of both communities that full security architecture has been activated, including tactical teams, intensified surveillance, and intelligence-led operations aimed at restoring peace and order.” Residents are urged to cooperate, with a warning that: “Anyone aiding or abetting crime in any part of the state will face the full weight of the law.”
