Kanu: Igbo group writes Omotosho

Nnamdi-Kanu-in-Court

From Okey Sampson, Umuahia

Ahead of the November 20 judgment of Justice James Omotosho in the case involving the Federal Government and the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, an Igbo group, South East Youths for Good Governance (SEYGG) has written an open letter to the judge urging him to prioritise the peace of the South East region in deciding Kanu’s fate.

In the open letter by the group’s president, Dr. Silas Eke and Secretary, Ifeanyi Asiegbu, the youths appealed to Justice Omotosho to consider the implications of the judgment on the peace and stability of the zone.

The youths, who linked the tension and unrest in the region to Kanu’s continued detention, expressed worry over the far-reaching implication any negative judgment could have on the stability of the region. The group observed that Kanu has overwhelming appeal in the entire region and anything affecting him would have huge implications on the people. The letter read in part: “We appeal for compassionate judicial consideration in the ongoing matter involving Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“Your Lord, it is widely recognised that Kanu’s prolonged detention has had far-reaching, emotional, zonal and economic effects on the people of the South-East region. “He remains a central figure whose continued detention has contributed to heightened tension, restiveness and uncertainty in the region.

“We all believe that his release, through any kind of discretion available to the honourable court, would significantly contribute to restoring calm, encouraging constructive dialogue and reducing agitation.

“His release will not only help to rebuild trust, but will also serve as a gesture towards national healing, reconciliation and unity.”

The youths explained that the open letter was not intended to dictate for the court but borne out of their respect for the integrity of the court as an apostle of peace.
