Kano State Government has flagged off the second phase of the foreign and domestic scholarship of postgraduate programmes for indigenes.

Daily Sun reported that 55 of the students would be sponsored in Malaysia, 13 in Uganda, 279 in India and 240 in Nigeria’s private and public universities.

Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf said the initiative was outlined in their election blueprint in 2023.

He stressed that the administration’s resolve to prioritise education in the state grew out of the decay they met in the state’s educational sector when they assumed office on May 29, 2023.

“Our schools, once symbols of hope and progress, had become shadows of themselves, plagued by dilapidated structures, shortage of classrooms, poor furniture and demoralised teachers. Many school properties were recklessly sold or converted to private use.

“In response, we declared an emergency on education on June 8, 2024, signalling our unwavering determination to rebuild the system.”

Governor Yusuf observed that as part of a multi-purpose approach to lifting education, the administration revived the Foreign Postgraduate Scholarship Programme introduced by Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso during his tenure.

“Under this programme, 418 students benefited in the first batch at 5 billion, 590 students will benefit in the second phase.

“This initiative is not just about funding education, it is about building a strong intellectual and professional resource base that will position Kano as a hub of excellence and progress.” The governor reminded the beneficiaries that their selection was based on academic merit and moral integrity, urging them to maintain the same discipline, hard work and determination that earned them the  opportunity.“You must complete your studies on time, excel in your fields and serve as worthy ambassadors of Kano State and Nigeria in general.

“You must not engage in anything that will bring shame to your state or your family. Shun illicit drugs, hooliganism, protests, immorality, 419 or cybercrime, and any act that violates your purpose of study,” he concluded.
