Kano Emirate Crisis: APC Chieftain Accuses FG of Insensitivity, Impunity
From Romanus Ugwu, Abuja
Salihu Moh Lukman, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has sharply criticized the federal government’s handling of the ongoing crisis in the Kano State Emirate council, accusing it of displaying “crass impunity” and “reckless insensitivity.”
In a statement released on Monday, Lukman expressed alarm at the federal government’s deployment of security forces to enforce the reinstatement of former Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, arguing that such actions are “frighteningly disgraceful” and disregard the choices of the people of Kano State.
He questioned the rationale behind President Bola Tinubu’s approval of this “reckless mission,” which he deems incompatible with the APC’s founding principles and democratic values. Lukman further criticized the use of federal might to undermine the constitutional authority of the Kano State government over traditional institutions, highlighting the growing crisis of impunity in the country.
Lukman expressed concern that this intervention, reminiscent of the “abrasive politics” of past military regimes, could further weaken the APC’s support base in Kano and the North. He attributed the party’s recent electoral setbacks in the region to its failure to fulfill campaign promises and its implementation of policies that have negatively impacted the standard of living of citizens.
He warned that the federal government’s actions in Kano could further erode the APC’s support in the region, particularly given the party’s poor performance in the 2023 Presidential elections.
Lukman urged President Tinubu and those behind this intervention to reconsider their approach, emphasizing the need to respect the constitutional authority of the Kano State government and the democratic rights of the people.
