Kaduna’s rehabilitation initiative for released protesters

By Alex Idris Musa

In an era where the bond between leaders and their constituents is becoming tenuously frayed, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State stands out as a beacon of hope and compassion, reaffirming that true leadership is intrinsically linked to empathy, selflessness and a generous dose of magnanimity. His recent initiative to rehabilitate and empower protesters who were arrested and detained during the #EndBadGovernace protests in August, but released on Wednesday, speaks volumes of his character as a compassionate Servant—Leader dedicated to the welfare and progress of his people. Through a blend of job creation, skill acquisition, and financial support, Governor Uba Sani has demonstrated that he recognizes the profound humanity in every citizen, regardless of their circumstances, provided they turn a new leaf and become responsible and law abiding members of the society.

The Secretary to Kaduna State Government, Dr. Abdulkadir Muazu Meyere, who announced the initiative to journalists after the protesters were reunited with their families at the Children Home along Kauru Road, Kaduna, said that the Governor had asked him to receive the credentials of those who have completed their tertiary education.

In his words, “The Governor promised that some of them will be given start-up capitals to commence trading, others will be taught skills and some will be given employment.”

The Secretary to the State Government also said that the government will be tracking the activities and conduct of all 39 of them, to ensure that they are of good behaviour ‘’before these benefits will be extended to them.’’ This is a commendable caveat in that it demonstrates the fact that the government equally prioritizes the importance of exemplary good behaviour by the people.

In this regard, Dr. Meyere disclosed that Kaduna State Government has taken the details of the released detainees, which include contact addresses, telephone numbers and the names of their Next of Kins, for easy tracking and monitoring.

In the area of health, the detainees were all medically examined and given psycho-social counselling on the need to change for the better, in order to be useful to themselves and the society at large. Both Islamic and Christian religious leaders were engaged to preach to them and counsel them embrace the teachings of their faiths and to avoid any bad company so as to benefit from God’s blessings here and in the hereafter.

All the 39 detainees were given a telephone each because they allegedly lost their own during detention. Sani also graciously approved the sum of N100,000 “as a measure of goodwill” to each of them.

Let it be said in very clear terms, in a world often marred by division and unrest, the essence of a leader is illuminated in their response to crises. Whenever protests erupted, it was evident that the voices of the people demanded to be heard, echoing the wider struggles for justice, equity, and better governance. In response, many leaders would have chosen the path of suppression, prioritizing political stability over the well-being of their people. However, Governor Sani recognized the deep-seated grievances behind the protests and instead extended a hand of compassion. His decision to offer jobs and skills training to those affected is not merely an act of kindness; it is an understanding of the broader sociopolitical context that fuels dissent.

The job creation component of Sani’s initiative is particularly noteworthy. By promising to provide sustainable employment opportunities, he takes the crucial step of addressing one of the root causes of discontent: unemployment. In many regions of the world, high levels of joblessness breed frustration and hopelessness, making young people vulnerable to cycles of unrest. By fostering an environment where citizens can find gainful employment, Sani is empowering individuals to reclaim their innate potential and contribute positively to the growth and development of society. This forward-thinking strategy diminishes the likelihood of future protests born from desperation, and therefore, effectively turning a potential source of conflict into one of cohesion and growth.

Complementing job opportunities, the skills acquisition aspect of the initiative shows a deep commitment to personal development and long-term success. In a rapidly changing world, the ability to learn and adapt is invaluable. By planning to equip yesterday’s protesters with skills that will make them marketable, Sani is not simply reacting to the immediate fallout from the protests; he is investing in the future of his constituents. This visionary approach serves as a profound statement: he sees the potential in every individual and is willing to nurture it.

Moreover, the gesture of providing gifts such as telephone handsets and the financial support of N100,000 are not merely symbolic acts but practical solutions aimed at easing the immediate burdens faced by the former detainees and their families. Access to communication through smart phones empowers individuals to stay connected with loved ones and engage with opportunities that may arise in their wake. The financial support will ensure that immediate necessities are met in record time. Such multifaceted aid signifies a holistic approach to rehabilitation, catering not only to economic needs but also to the societal and emotional domains of recovery.

Governor Sani’s approach goes beyond standard political rhetoric; it is an embodiment of Servant—Leadership rooted in compassion, magnanimity and empathy. His actions foster a renewed sense of trust between leaders and the people they serve. This trust is crucial for any society seeking to build a cohesive and collaborative future. When leaders prioritize the needs of their people and actively engage in restorative measures, like the instant case with Sani, they foster loyalty and respect that transcends political divides. The initiative instills a belief that their government is indeed listening and responding to their concerns, thereby fostering civic engagement and participation in governance.

In a landscape where cynicism towards leadership is prevalent, Sani’s magnanimity stands as a powerful counter-narrative, emphasizing that effective leadership is not merely about the exercise of power but nurturing the human spirit. Through his compassionate response to the plight of the protesters, he not only addresses immediate needs but also cultivates an environment of hope and renewal, ultimately reinforcing the fabric of society.

As the world watches how governance evolves in response to the challenges of the day, Governor Sani’s actions provide a blueprint for others. Compassionate Servant—Leadership is not just a lofty ideal but a tangible practice that can transform communities, bridge divides, and nurture the next generation of leaders. By standing with his constituents in their challenges and actively working towards rehabilitation and empowerment, he embodies the essence of true leadership—one that resonates deeply with the aspirations of his people and secures a brighter future for all.

Sani’s generous offering of jobs, skills training, and financial support to the released protesters is not only a rehabilitation initiative but a testament to his commitment to serving the interests of his people. In a time that calls for empathy and understanding, his actions shine as a guiding light, reminding us all of the power of compassion in leadership.
