…as Commissioner showcase Governor’s achievements in paper presentation
From Noah Ebije, Kaduna
The Supervisory Councillors from across the 23 local government areas of Kaduna State have unanimously endorsed Governor Uba Sani for reelection come 2027, assuring to use their grass roots network to work for him.
According to the councillors, Kaduna State is gradually reclaiming its historic reputation as a beacon of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence, driven by deliberate policies and inclusive leadership under Governor Uba Sani.
Once deeply fractured along religious and ethnic lines, the State is now witnessing a steady restoration of trust between Christians and Muslims.
This renewed sense of unity was underscored at the Kaduna State Supervisory Councillors get together with the theme “Harmony and Hope: Building a Better Kaduna Together Under His Excellency, Dr.Uba Sani.
In his paper presentation, the Kaduna State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Sir James A. Kanyip, reflected on how the 2000 ethno-religious crisis entrenched segregation, forcing communities to retreat into religious enclaves across the state, particularly in Kaduna metropolis and several local government areas.
He recalled how interfaith social bonds that once defined Kaduna — joint festive celebrations, shared meals and mutual participation in religious observances — were eroded by years of violence, mistrust and fear, creating what he described as a “cold war” between faith communities.
Drawing from the reflections of the late Bishop Joseph Danlami Bagobiri, Kanyip emphasised that peace is more than the absence of war; it is a condition necessary for social progress, economic growth and psychological stability. He noted that unresolved injustice, poverty and marginalisation often masquerade as religious conflict.
Against this backdrop, he said Governor Sani’s administration has adopted a proactive peace-building strategy that prioritises justice, inclusivity and dialogue. Since assuming office in May 2023, the state has recorded an absence of major ethno-religious violence, a development widely seen as remarkable given Kaduna’s past.
Central to this progress he stressed is the Kaduna Peace Model, a locally driven framework that empowers traditional and religious leaders as frontline peace actors. The model emphasises dialogue over force and has contributed to stability in previously volatile areas such as Birnin Gwari, Giwa, Igabi, Kauru and Kajuru.

“Governor Uba Sani has also reinforced symbolic leadership by personally participating in major Christian and Muslim religious events, including Unity Christmas Carols and Islamic celebrations in Zaria. These gestures, observers say, send a strong message that diversity is a shared strength.
“Institutionally, the reactivation of the Interfaith Council and the operations of the Bureau of Interfaith Affairs have provided structured platforms for continuous engagement, conflict resolution and trust-building among religious leaders across the state.
“Complementing these efforts is the Kaduna Elders Forum, chaired by former Head of Service, Alhaji Mustapha, and co-chaired by retired General Zamani Lekwot. The forum serves as a moral compass, offering counsel to government on sensitive peace and unity issues.
Beyond dialogue, the administration has linked peace to development by ensuring equitable distribution of infrastructure and social services across all senatorial zones, without religious or ethnic bias. Schools, healthcare centres, roads and vocational institutes have been spread evenly across the state.
The restoration of government sponsorship for both Christian and Muslim pilgrimages has further strengthened religious harmony, reversing policies of the previous administration and restoring a sense of inclusion among faith communities.
Political inclusiveness has also played a role, with appointments at both state and federal levels reflecting balance and fairness. The emergence of two federal ministers from Kaduna State has eased long-standing grievances over marginalisation.
Looking to the future, Kanyip proposed the idea of a Nigerian adaptation of Germany’s “House of One” — a shared interfaith complex — as a bold experiment in institutionalising Christian-Muslim unity and reshaping the national psyche away from religious polarisation.
As Kaduna charts this new path, the state is increasingly viewed as a subnational model for managing diversity in Nigeria. Under Governor Sani, the message is clear: sustainable peace is achievable when governance is just, inclusive and rooted in a shared sense of belonging, he stated.
In their messages, the Chairman of the Supervisory Councillors Barr. Lolo Garba Ikara and planning committee Chairman Nura Dabo both commended Governor Sani for giving them opportunity to serve, adding that they will reciprocate in 2027.
