The Federal High Court in Enugu State has restrained the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and University of Lagos (UNILAG) from going ahead with the 2025/2026 admission exercise.

The ruling was based on an ex parte order sought by some candidates who chose OAU and UNILAG for the 2025/2026 admission exercise.

The Federal High Court judge, Justice A.T. Segun-Bello, while issuing the restraining order, directed JAMB to suspend the ongoing admission exercise for OAU and UNILAG.

The judge, while ruling on a case brought by some candidates, held that they have a “veritable and triable issue”.

The court ruling was shared in a post on X by an education technology expert and Chief Executive Officer of Educare, Alex Onyia.

Onyia revealed that the restraining order followed an ex-parte motion filed by some candidates, Chibuzor Success, Oyeleye Zainab Ayomide, Adedeji John Samuel, Monsura Aliat Aduragbem, and Bassey Daniel Nsikak, on behalf of other affected applicants of the 2025 post-UTME of OAU and UNILAG.

The applicants sought interim injunctions restraining the two institutions and JAMB from releasing, approving, uploading, or finalising any admission list for the new academic session.

While ruling on the ex parte motion in Enugu, Justice Segun-Bello held that there was a “veritable and triable issue” requiring both sides to be heard. The judge further directed the applicants to put JAMB, OAU and UNILAG on notice.

He also ordered all parties to maintain the status quo, preserving the current state of affairs regarding the 2025/2026 admission list, pending the hearing of the substantive motion on October 28.

The UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola and the Head of Communication Unit I, Adejoke Alega- Ibraheem, did not respond to Daily Sun’s text messages on the court order.

The Director of JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, said the Board was not aware of the restraining order.

However, OAU management, through the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, acknowledged the ruling.

He told Daily Sun that it was not a judgment, but a restraining order sought by some candidates. “The candidates sued JAMB, OAU and UNILAG. Unfortunately, the ruling was given, on Tuesday, and today (Wednesday) is a public holiday, management will look at the order tomorrow (Thursday).

“Computer filling of admission processes are ongoing. Some candidates have been offered admission and have accepted the offer. The order is on JAMB. From the reliefs sought, it was not stated which institutions or organisations offended them. They are praying the Court, through ex parte order, to restrain OAU, UNILAG and JAMB from going ahead with the 2025/2026 admission exercise.”

Olanrewaju explained that the OAU legal unit would be on top of the situation after the public holiday.
