Media practitioners in the country have been advised to dwell more on Environmental reportage so as to enlighten the general public on the dangers of climate change that may affect the socio-economic activities of the citizens.
General Manager, Human Resource, Dangote Cement Company,Mr Adinoyi Haruna made the call in Obajana, Kogi State at a two day Environmental journalism workshop organised for journalists by the company in partnership with Climate Africa Media Initiative and Centre,CAMIC.
Mr Haruna who said environment had been under reported all the while,charged the participants to broaden their knowledge on environmental sustainability and propagate it,noting that the media has a role to play in making environmental sustainability a way of life.
According to him, the company is deliberate in it’s commitment towards protecting and sustaining the environment, hence the introduction of cutting edge technology in trapping dust in the production of cement.
He stressed that enhancing environmental sustainability was a collective responsibility for everyone as no society could attain greater heights without a conducive environment.
Dr. Egazuema Okoreba, Sustainability Manager, Dangote Group Pan Africa in her own address said
Dangote Group of Companies has fully engrained sustainability into all aspects of its operation by adopting seven out of the fourteen sustainable development goals for environmental sustainability.
Dr. Okoroba urged Journalists to report beyond the finances, profit and loss accomplishments and activities of the Dangote Group, and urged the media to always look at Environment sustainability policy put in place by the Dangote Group.
Dr. Okoroba Desclosed that the Dangote Group is adopting seven pillars of the SSG goals in environmental sustainability and mentioned the areas to include; economy, social institution and the environment.
She mentioned other areas of intervention by the Dangote Group at ensuring environmental sustainability to include finance, operational institutions and culture, stressing the Group’s Environment sustainability was an initiave conceived since 2017 and 2018.
Earlier, Executive Director, Climate Africa Media Initiative Centre, CAMIC,Mr Aliu Akoshile in his opening remarks said the workshop was aimed at broadening the knowledge of the participants on environmental sustainability and the need to give prominence to the reportage of environmental issues.
Mr.Akoshile described environment as a binding force for human activities and admonished journalists to integrate reporting the environment from the perspective of conducting investigations in their news reports.
The guest speaker at the programme, who is a Media Expert in Investigative Environmental reporting ,Mr Taiwo Adebayo while delivering a lecture on Investigative Environmental Journalism, called on the participants to ensure that they do fact checks .
The workshop with the theme,”Reporting the Environment for Sustainability” had participants drawn from Kogi,Benue,Niger,FCT and Kwara States in attendance.
The journalists were later conducted in a tour guide round the facility of the gigantic obajana cement factory by one
